A Teacher's Guide to Point of Honor:
EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT POINT OF HONOR
Point of Honor was a plantation owned by Dr. George Cabell when Lynchburg and the United States were both new. The home, built in 1815, is an outstanding example of Federal architecture that still overlooks Downtown Lynchburg. Physician to Patrick Henry, Dr. Cabell also owned a fleet of boats that hauled tobacco for Thomas Jefferson from his nearby plantation Poplar Forest.
Tours and programs are available for grades K-12 based on Virginia’s S.O.L. elements. Students will gain an understanding of what life was like in Central Virginia and how medicine was practiced in the early 19th century. Students can take a guided tour of Dr. Cabell’s home and experience spinning and weaving, open hearth cooking, candle making, games of the 1800s, and quill pen writing.
Your visit can be personalized according to the curriculum and the amount of time you have available. Programs can also include Native American Culture, Ice Age Discoveries, The Civil War,
World War II, Analyzing Historic Documents, Reading & Writing Recipes, and Making A Cookbook.
